The City of Brentwood selected the joint venture of Mark Davis Design + FOG Studio from a large pool of applicants to design a modest renovation to their existing library. That project never materialized as the community spoke up about wanting and needing a new facility rather than renovating the old decrepit library. To our good fortune the City awarded us this much bigger project, a new two-story, 20,000 square foot facility in downtown Brentwood.
Three existing buildings on the site were demolished for this full-site build-out. The goal was to maximize the amount of space we could fit on the small downtown parcel. On-site parking was not required, the building is bordered by a residential neighborhood to the south so scale, proportion, materials, colors, orientation were all critical factors in designing the new library and ensuring it was a good fit in the surrounding context.
